What Actually Counts as a Tree Emergency

Emergency tree service costs more than scheduled work, and it should — it means a crew, equipment and after-hours response for one property instead of a planned route. So the practical question for a homeowner is which situations genuinely require that and which can wait for a normal appointment.

Here is how we triage a call.

True Emergencies — Call Now

Anything involving a power line. Tree or limb contacting a line, or a line down. Call your utility first, then a tree service. Nobody approaches it.

A tree on a structure. On the house, the garage, a vehicle with someone potentially inside. This is immediate, and if there is any question of structural compromise or injury, 911 first.

A tree actively failing. Visible movement, audible cracking, the root plate lifting and the ground heaving on one side, a trunk crack that is opening. If a tree is moving, it is going to move further.

A hanging limb over an occupied area. A widowmaker over a driveway, walkway, patio or play area. These come down without warning and they are the main cause of post-storm injuries.

A tree blocking the only access. If it is across the driveway and someone in the household needs medical access, or emergency vehicles could not reach the property, that is an emergency.

A tree leaning hard against a structure. Even without immediate failure, the load is on the building and it is unpredictable.

For any of these, evacuate the area beneath and around it, keep everyone out, and call.

Urgent, But Daylight Is Fine

A tree leaning noticeably after a storm but not on anything and not actively moving. Worth a prompt assessment, generally not a midnight call.

Significant limb breakage where the broken material is on the ground rather than hung up.

A large uprooted tree in the open yard, away from structures.

A split trunk or major crack discovered on a tree that is otherwise standing normally.

These deserve a call the same day and a look within a day or two, particularly with more weather coming.

Can Wait for a Scheduled Appointment

Deadwood in the canopy — worth addressing, not tonight.

A tree that has looked leaned for years. A long-established lean that has not changed is a different situation from a new one. What matters is change.

Mushrooms at the base, thinning canopy, or other decline symptoms. These indicate a problem worth assessing but not an emergency, unless the tree is large and near a target.

Roots lifting a sidewalk, branches on the roof, general overgrowth.

Routine trimming, including hurricane season prep — which is exactly the kind of thing that should be scheduled early rather than becoming an emergency later.

What Changes the Answer

Targets. The same failing tree is an emergency over a bedroom and a scheduling item in the back of a vacant lot. What is beneath it drives the urgency more than the tree's condition does.

Weather coming. A compromised tree with a storm in the forecast moves up the list considerably. In hurricane season, that changes fast.

Time of day and access. Genuine hazard work at night is harder and more dangerous. Sometimes the right answer is to secure the area, keep everyone away, and work at first light. A good crew will tell you that rather than take the after-hours rate.

What to Tell Us When You Call

The more specific you are, the better we can respond with the right equipment:

• What failed, and what is it on or near?
• Is anyone hurt? Are power lines involved?
• Roughly how big — trunk diameter, height, species if you know it
• Can a truck get to it? What is the access like?
• Is anyone in danger right now?

"A large oak split and half of it is on the garage roof, no lines involved, driveway access is clear" gets a far better response than "I have a tree problem."

While You Wait

• Keep everyone away from the area, including out from under any hanging material
• Do not go up on a roof with a tree on it
• Move vehicles if it is safe to do so
• Photograph everything before anything is touched, for insurance
• Do not start cutting

That last one matters. Cutting into a tree under load without understanding where the tension is stored is how people get seriously hurt during cleanup rather than during the storm.

After Hurricanes, Expect a Queue

Following a major storm, every crew in Volusia County is working and triage is real. Life-safety situations and structures come before yard debris. If you are told it will be a few days for a fallen tree in the open yard, that is honest scheduling rather than being ignored.
