Southern Magnolia Care on the Volusia Coast

Magnolias are tough, salt-tolerant and slow to forgive bad pruning. Here is what they need and the mistakes that ruin them.

Southern magnolia is one of the better large trees for coastal Volusia County: genuinely handsome, reasonably salt tolerant, a solid hurricane performer when well structured, and evergreen so it holds its form year-round. It is also frequently mistreated, mostly through pruning it like something it is not.

What It Wants

Sun. Full sun to partial shade. It will grow in shade and it will be thin and leggy.

Soil. Slightly acidic, well drained, with organic matter. Our sandy coastal soil drains beautifully and holds very little, so organic matter and mulch matter more here than the soil chemistry does.

Water. Consistent moisture while establishing, which takes a couple of years. Established magnolias handle dry spells reasonably but appreciate deep watering during genuine drought.

Space. This is the item people get wrong. Southern magnolia gets large โ€” a mature specimen is a substantial tree with a broad canopy. Planted ten feet from a house it becomes a problem, and the answer is usually removal because the tree cannot be shrunk.

Check the mature size before planting, and use one of the smaller cultivars if the space is limited.

The Lower Limbs Are Not a Problem to Solve

The most common thing done to magnolias is limbing them up โ€” removing the lower branches to create a clear trunk and open the space beneath.

A southern magnolia's natural form sweeps to the ground, and that skirt is doing several useful things: shading the trunk, sheltering the shallow root system, dropping leaves that mulch the root zone, and contributing to the tree's low center of gravity and wind stability.

Remove it and you get a magnolia with a bare lower trunk, an exposed root zone, a lawn area where grass will not grow anyway because of the shade and the root competition, and a tree that is arguably less stable.

If you want a clean trunk, plant something else. If you have a magnolia with a skirt, consider leaving it and mulching under it rather than fighting for turf that will never look good there.

Pruning, Sparingly

Magnolias do not respond well to heavy pruning and they seal wounds slowly. Keep it minimal:

Avoid heavy thinning, topping, or the interior stripping that leaves foliage only at branch tips. Timing-wise, after flowering is a reasonable general window, and light corrective work can be done most of the year here.

Leaf Drop Is Constant and Normal

Evergreen does not mean it does not shed. Southern magnolia drops leaves throughout the year with a heavier flush in spring as new growth pushes the old leaves off. Those leaves are large, leathery and slow to decompose, and homeowners find them tedious.

The best answer is to let them stay under the tree as natural mulch inside the drip line, and only clean up what lands on turf and hardscape. They are excellent mulch and they are already exactly where the tree wants them.

Common Problems

Chlorosis โ€” yellowing between the veins while veins stay green โ€” usually indicates a nutrient availability problem often tied to soil pH being too high. Magnolias want slightly acidic soil, and irrigation water or nearby concrete and shell can push pH up in coastal landscapes.

Scale insects produce sticky honeydew and sooty mold, which is the black film people notice first. Sooty mold is a symptom, not the problem; treat the insects and the mold weathers away.

Algal leaf spot shows as raised greenish or gray patches on leaves in our humidity. Usually cosmetic.

Root damage from construction, trenching or grade changes is a major cause of magnolia decline and, as with most trees, the symptoms appear well after the damage.

Salt and Wind

Southern magnolia has moderate salt tolerance, which makes it usable in many coastal Volusia settings but not right at the dune line. Direct salt spray will burn foliage on the exposed side.

Wind tolerance is decent when the tree is structurally sound with a full canopy and an intact lower skirt. Magnolias generally perform respectably in storms compared with faster-growing, weaker-wooded species.

Sweetbay Magnolia Is the Other Option

Worth knowing about: sweetbay magnolia is a Florida native, smaller, more tolerant of wet soil, and a good choice for low areas where southern magnolia would struggle. It is a genuinely underused tree in this region.

Planting Notes

Plant with the root flare visible at or slightly above grade โ€” magnolias planted too deep decline. Dig wide rather than deep. Mulch in a broad ring, two to three inches, pulled back from the trunk. Water consistently through establishment.

Do not plant one where you will later want the lower limbs gone.
