After a major rain event or a storm surge in coastal Volusia County, attention goes to the trees that fell. The trees that stood in water for three days often turn out to be the bigger long-term problem, and nobody notices until months later.
Roots Need Oxygen
The core issue is simple and counterintuitive: roots respire. They need oxygen from the pore spaces in soil. When those spaces fill with water, oxygen is displaced and roots begin to suffocate within a surprisingly short time.
How much damage occurs depends on how long the water stands, how warm it is โ warm water holds less oxygen and accelerates root decline โ the species, and the tree's condition going in.
A day or two of standing water is usually survivable for most species. A week is serious. Warm standing water in a Florida summer is worse than cool water in winter.
Salt Water Is a Separate Problem
On the Volusia coast, storm surge brings salt water inland, and that is a different injury. Salt in the root zone interferes with a tree's ability to take up water at all, essentially causing physiological drought even in wet soil. It also causes direct toxicity.
Signs are leaf scorch, browning at leaf margins, and dieback in the weeks following an inundation.
Where practical, flushing the root zone with fresh water helps move salts down through the profile โ which works far better in our sandy soil than it would in clay. Do it as soon as you reasonably can after a surge event.
Salt tolerance varies widely by species, and the natives adapted to coastal conditions โ cabbage palm, live oak to a degree, mangroves in their zone โ handle it far better than inland species.
The Delayed Symptoms
This is why flood damage is missed. A tree with a damaged root system may look normal for weeks or months. Then:
- Leaves yellow, or scorch at the margins
- The canopy thins from the top down
- Growth slows noticeably
- Leaves drop out of season
- Dieback appears in the upper canopy
- Secondary pests and diseases move in on a weakened tree
By the time it is obvious, the damage happened months ago.
The Stability Problem
The other consequence, and the one that matters immediately in a hurricane zone: saturated soil holds trees poorly.
A tree in waterlogged ground can be uprooted by wind that would not otherwise move it, which is why so many trees fail during the later hours of a storm rather than at peak wind โ the ground has become saturated by then.
And if roots die from prolonged flooding, the tree's anchorage degrades over the following seasons. A tree that survived the flood can fail in a later, milder storm.
Look for soil cracking or heaving on one side of a tree, or a lean that was not there before. Both are stability warnings.
What Actually Helps
Get the water off as quickly as possible. Clear blocked drains and swales, pump if practical, and remove anything damming water against the root zone. Days matter.
Remove sediment. Storms deposit silt and sand over root zones. Even a few inches of new material over a root system reduces gas exchange and behaves like a grade change. Remove deposited sediment from around the base and out over the root zone.
Flush salt if the water was saline and you have fresh water available.
Do not compact the soil. Saturated soil compacts very easily. Keep equipment and vehicles off the root zone until it dries. Cleanup crews driving over wet ground do lasting damage.
Do not fertilize. The instinct to feed a stressed tree is understandable and wrong. Pushing growth on a tree with a damaged root system makes the imbalance worse. Wait until the tree is clearly recovering.
Do not prune heavily. Removing canopy on top of root loss compounds the stress. Remove genuinely dead or hazardous material only.
Mulch, lightly and wide, once the soil has drained, to protect structure and support recovery.
Water during subsequent dry spells. This sounds absurd after a flood, and it is correct. A tree with a reduced root system cannot forage effectively, so it becomes drought-sensitive. The following spring is when many flood-damaged trees actually die.
Which Trees Are Most at Risk
Species vary enormously in flood tolerance. Bald cypress, red maple and sweetbay magnolia handle wet feet well. Many upland species do not. Palms vary, with cabbage palm being notably tolerant.
Trees already stressed โ recently transplanted, construction-damaged, in decline โ have the least reserve and are most likely to be lost.
Monitor for a Year or More
Flood-damaged trees need watching over the following seasons. Have large trees near structures assessed for stability, particularly if there was any soil movement. Watch for canopy changes. And be aware that decline showing up eight months after a flood is entirely consistent with the flood being the cause.
Long Term
If an area of your property floods repeatedly, the durable fix is drainage rather than repeated tree replacement. And when replanting a low area, choose species adapted to periodic inundation rather than fighting the site.
