Dooryard Citrus: When to Treat and When to Take It Out

We are asked to look at declining citrus constantly across Edgewater, Mims, Oak Hill and the surrounding area, and the honest answer is frequently not the one people want.

Citrus greening, plainly

Huanglongbing is a bacterial disease spread by the Asian citrus psyllid. There is no cure for an infected tree. It has changed dooryard citrus in Florida fundamentally.

Symptoms:

• Blotchy, asymmetric yellowing on leaves — distinct from the symmetric pattern of a nutrient deficiency. This asymmetry is the key diagnostic.
• Twig dieback.
• Small, lopsided fruit that stays green at the stem end.
• Bitter fruit.
• Premature fruit drop.
• Progressive decline over several years.

What it is not

Plenty of struggling citrus is not greening, and it is worth ruling out the correctable things first:

• Nutrient deficiency, which produces symmetric patterns on the leaf. Correctable with the right feeding.
• Root rot from poor drainage, which is common in low-lying areas around the lagoon.
• Overwatering, which is more common than under-watering here.
• Planting too deep, with the graft union buried.
• Salt damage on coastal properties.
• Leaf miner, which is disfiguring and largely cosmetic on a mature tree.

When to keep working with it

A tree with correctable problems, or an early-stage tree that is still producing usable fruit, is worth maintaining — good nutrition, appropriate watering, psyllid management, and realistic expectations. Some trees carry on productively for years.

When to take it out

• Advanced greening with widespread dieback and no usable fruit.
• A tree that has declined past the point where the structure is sound.
• A dead or nearly dead tree, which becomes a hazard and a host.

If you are replanting

• Buy only from certified nurseries. Uncertified stock is a genuine risk to your other trees and your neighbours'.
• Do not move citrus material between areas in ways that violate quarantine rules.
• Plant at the correct depth with the graft union well above soil level.
• Choose a site with genuine drainage.
• Accept that a dooryard citrus tree in Florida now has a shorter realistic lifespan than it did a generation ago.
